Horror games for beginners: where to start

The right order for someone who has never touched a horror game, and why you should not start with the darkest section.

If you have never played a horror game, the list on this site can look intimidating before you open anything. It is not. The problem is not the content but the order. Open the wrong title first and you will conclude the genre is not for you.

Start with the light scares section. Those titles are colourful, short, and contain no sudden scenes. The point is not to frighten you but to make you used to the shape: one screen, one task, one ending. After three or four titles you will notice you have stopped looking for the exit button.

The second step is horror puzzles. Here the tension comes from layout rather than from something chasing you. You can stop and think for a minute without being punished. That matters for beginners, because panic is the main cause of death in this genre, and puzzles do not ask you to act within a quarter of a second.

The third step is the haunted house section. Pick a title that states a play time under ten minutes. If you feel too anxious at the second minute, stop and come back tomorrow. There is no rule that says a title must be finished in one sitting.

Avoid the night monsters section early on. Not because it is worse, but because it requires reading attack patterns, and that skill is built from the two previous sections. Beginners who go straight in usually quit after three deaths and do not return.

One note on sound: play with earphones but at low volume. Horror audio is designed to startle, and high volume makes the startle physical. At low volume you still hear the signals without leaving your chair.

Finally, set a time limit before you play. Short games easily become long when you keep retrying, and fatigue turns tension into irritation. Twenty minutes a day is enough to build the habit without coming to dislike the genre.
